Nutritions, nutritions... by Lotzman Katzman

Military leaders along with U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack urged Congress to pass child nutrition legislation by September 30.

The Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act of 2010 would boost the nutritional value of school meals by using more fruits and vegetables and by eliminating junk food, such as the ones found in school vending machines. The Senate version passed in August, and now it’s left to the House of Representatives, which would need to pass its version before the legislation expires September 30. The House is expected to take up the re-authorization before the deadline, since the bill has passed out of committee with bipartisan support.

More than 100 retired generals and admirals signed a letter to Congress describing the child nutrition bill as crucial to reducing childhood obesity and helping national security, by creating a pool of young adults who qualify for military service.

“Obesity is now the leading medical reason why young Americans today are unable to qualify for the armed forces. At least 9 million young adults, or 27 percent of all young Americans ages 17 to 24, are too overweight to enlist,” their letter read.

The group of retired military leaders, called Mission Readiness issued a report earlier this year, describing how more than a quarter of young adults are unable to meet physical requirements to join the military, creating a potential threat to national security.

Ex-military leaders: Young adults 'too fat to fight'

“Turning the tide of obesity in this country will not be an easy task,” the letter stated.  “Certainly, there is no single action that we as a nation can take to remedy this problem. However, it is clear that one immediate step we must take is to improve the quality and nutritional value of food and beverages served in our schools.”

Advocates say that as much as 40 percent of a child’s daily caloric intake occurs at school, so these foods should be nutritious to produce a healthy generation.

“We believe schools are a critical place to address the obesity issue,” said retired Rear Admiral James A Barnett, Jr. of the U.S. Navy in a news conference Tuesday.  “Millions buy food and snacks at schools everyday.”

The group says improving nutrition in the nation’s schools is a critical step to combat obesity among the youth.  Military leaders made a similar push in 1945, when concerns about poor nutrition in potential recruits resulted in the creation of a national school lunch program.

Vilsack said there needs to be a better job of promoting “vegetables and fruits, low-fat dairy, whole grains” and “getting sugar, sodium, fat content out of the meals.  There needs to be a consistent message between what’s in the lunch line and vending machines. This is very important bill and we’re close to getting it done.  We need Congress to act.”

New options for enteral nutrition in patients with severe acute pancreatitis

Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) requires an adequate nutritional support. Enteral nutrition (EN) should be preferred to total parenteral nutrition in patients with SAP, as it is associated with reduced mortality and complications. However, in clinical practice EN is employed far less frequently than it should. The main obstacle to EN diffusion is that it is considered complicated, as to ensure full pancreatic rest, nutrition tubes should be placed in the jejunum, requiring often troublesome procedures. In the past few years, it has been proposed that EN through nasogastric (NG) tubes may be a simple, safe and equally valid alternative to nasojejunal tubes.

A research article published on August 7, 2010 in the World Journal of Gastroenterology addresses this question. The authors speculated that a pragmatic possibility in real-world clinical practice would be to employ NG feeding whenever tube migration to the jejunum of bedside inserted feeding tubes does not occur spontaneously. They therefore aimed at assessing the rate of spontaneous distal migration of EN tubes in patients with predicted SAP, to identify possible factors associated with it, and to compare the safety and tolerability of EN with an elemental formula in patients who started nutrition with a "proximal", NG or a "distal", naso-intestinal tube, depending on the success of spontaneous tube migration.

This is the first study of its kind observing the outcome of EN in SAP patients in a "real world" clinical setting, with the study protocol driven by the need to have more solid grounds in making clinical decisions about everyday medical care circumstances. Both the proximal and the distal enteral approaches resulted to be feasible, safe and effective in most patients. This issue has a relevant impact on everyday clinical practice as the main limit to EN usage in AP is the technical difficulty in obtaining small bowel access.

YORK WEIGHT BENCH by York Weight Bench

The bench press is a staple of all workout routines. The basic exercise is designed to work your pectoralis major and minor, or chest muscles directly, with supplementary stress upon the shoulders and triceps. Of course, success at the bench press is the ultimate measure of upper body strength, with the phrase "How much do you bench?" establishing the catch phrase to throw down the gauntlet between male amateurs and serious workout mavens. Personally, I would set 10 repetitions of 225, or 2 plates as the barrier separating contenders from pretenders at the bench press for men. Of course, women will also flock to the bench press exercise to sculpt nicely toned arms and improved bust lines.

Appreciating the perfect technique is ideal for growth. Athletes must concern themselves with targeting their chests and controlling the weight in order to maximize efficiency, maintain safety, and avoid injury. The lift may be performed with barbells or dumbbells to isolate the pectorals. Veterans of the bench press often prefer to use dumbbells in order to place equal burn upon each arm.

This guide will address how to bench-press with the perfect form. The proper motion combines safety measures, hand placement, breathing, and control to effectively build your chest.

How to Bench Press with the Perfect Form: Safety First

Use common sense and consult with your physician prior to initiating any exercise regimen.

Beginners should locate a spotter to stand behind the bench set-up and assist athletes to control the weight and mitigate disastrous accidents. Experienced spotters will allow partners to complete the bulk of the work, provide encouragement, and gently guide the barbell through sticking points.

Rookies may wish to begin with the bar to appreciate the technique, and more advanced players should perform a warm-up set of weight that may easily be pressed 10 times. Rack the weights on the bar with the "numbers in" and the heaviest metal towards the interior of the assembly (45, 35, 25, etc.)

Remember to add clips to both ends of the barbell iron to secure the weights.

The term "disastrous accident" intimates the possibility of torn rotator cuffs, strained backs, cracked ribs, and-or the utter embarrassment of stalled weight upon your chest, and the unbalanced barbell dropping one 45-pound plate onto the floor with a thud, followed by the bar launching itself into midair.

Not cool.

How to Bench Press with the Perfect Form: Hand and Body Placement

Men and women will approach the bench and lay flat on the contraption. The knees should be bent slightly backwards at an 80-degree angle to provide a strong base. Meaning, the hips, butt, and shoulder blades are to remain firmly affixed to the bench in order to preserve balance and generate power. Complete your base by squeezing your back shoulders together, so that the chest demonstrates curvature and remains pronounced at the point of attack.

Next, serious athletes will look directly skyward to ensure that the barbell is at eye level. All barbells carry grooved finishes, with flattened circumferential rings that serve as reference points. Most men will place their ring fingers at these critical marks and encircle the bar with their hands and wrists.

Importantly, the elbows should be poised at 90-degree angles, where the forearms are vertical and perpendicular with the floor. The wrists are to be bent back somewhat, so that the weight rests upon the lower palms of both hands.

How to Bench Press with the Perfect Form: Control the Weight and Breathe

Athletes should alert the spotter to lift the bar off the rack upon the count of three, or deliver the set of dumbbells into ready hands at the bench. Train by keeping the elbows slightly flexed at the highest point of the exercise to prevent injury. Remember to breathe in deeply through an embellished "O" shaped mouth as you relax your arms to lower the weight assembly towards the center of your chest.

Men and women must control the weight heading downward, and graze their chests, before exploding back up with the barbell or dumbbells.

This explosion is characterized with a solid kick of energy that radiates from firmly planted legs and into the chest and arms. Work out mavens will generate additional power by exhaling throughout the press and into the high point with elbows flexed. Please remember to be considerate of your spotter and take care that your breath does not carry the aroma of raw sewage.

Repeat the exercise by breathing in at the apex while lowering the bar or dumbbells, yet again.

The weight is to be controlled with strong, fluid motions. Do not bounce the barbell off your chest like an overmatched lunatic. Do not cheat by arching your lower back and stalling at the low point to gasp for air. Cracked ribs, slipped discs, complete failure, and behaving like an utter tool, represent the direct consequences of improper form at the bench press.

Now, give me 10 reps of 225 on the bench, right now.

This is light and easy weight.

Yankees What Happened To Our Don?

  • Yankees 10, Mariners 0: CC Sabathia hasn't lost at Yankee Stadium in his last 15 regular-season decisions -- he did lose Game 1 of the World Series last year -- and he extended that streak with ease Sunday. Rain prevented him from working into the seventh inning, but it didn't stop Robinson Cano from hitting a grand slam and knocking in a career-high six runs. The Yankees now have 10 grand slams this season. That matches a franchise mark from 1987, when Don Mattingly had six himself. The Yankees are now 12-0 without Alex Rodriguez this season. Rodriguez is on the disabled list for almost another two weeks, so if the Yankees can keep that up, they can probably all but wrap up a playoff spot. Don't hold your breath, though.

  • Pirates 2, Mets 1: Johan Santana has now thrown three straight complete games. Unfortunately, he's lost the last two of them. Zach Duke outdueled his Mets counterpart as the Pirates avoided a sweep. Jose Tabata -- an ex-Yankees prospect -- and ex-Met Lastings Milledge homered for the Pirates runs. A Carlos Beltran sacrifice fly accounted for the Mets run.

The Dodgers need pitching, hitting, a great closer, a first baseman who can hit for power and the same at third, and probably a new center fielder and what do they end up with?

A new manager who has never managed before.

I love Don Mattingly as a player. With that steady career batting average of .307, nine gold gloves, an MVP Award and some batting titles - but can he transpose his personal winning attitude and baseball acumen to his team?

It is kind of scary if you are a Dodger fan.  Just this week he said he had no idea why the Dodgers were hitting so poorly. This from the Dodgers hitting coach.

In his one stint as manager a month or so ago when Torre was tossed from the game, he made a really stupid mistake when he went to the mound twice in the same trip.  Donnie Baseball either forgot or didn't know the rule.  Either way, I am glad he's gotten that one out of the way.

Listen, Mattingly may have learned a lot while working at the feet of one of the great managers of our time but it appears like a shot in the dark.  I know Joe Torre and you are no Joe Torre.

The Dodgers are a mess as everyone knows what with the owners' divorce proceedings which led to a slashed budget which led to no buying power in the off-season which led to a weakened squad that included a 5th starter with zero big league experience which led to no true back-ups for the weary and the wounded which led to an almost last place finish.

They need a miracle worker not a newbie manager who will be learning on the job.

I wish him well and hope he can pull this one out as easily as he could snare an errant throw in the dirt.

Buy what you need for the first day of school but don’t buy too much for the rest of the year. Some items, such as pencils and pens, might be useful to stock up on if there is a great sale. But since many stores overstock on items, you may actually be able to find some bargains by scanning for sales after the back to school rush is over.
